Centillium Technology Joins Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HPNA)

FREMONT, Calif., April 5, 1999 –
Centillium Technology Corporation, a leader in Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) chipset solutions, today announced that it has joined the Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HomePNA), an industry group formed to develop specifications for interoperable, home-networked devices using the telephone wiring already in place. The move will allow Centillium to help shape the direction of home networking technologies, especially as they relate to Internet access technologies such as ADSL G.Lite (G.992.2).

Centillium joins many leading technology companies that are dedicated to delivering high-speed, affordable home networking solutions via telephone wires. According to Dataquest, more than 15 million homes in the U.S. have two or more PCs and analysts expect this number to double over the next two years. Nearly one in two home PCs access the Internet regularly according to Ziff-Davis Market Intelligence. Jupiter Communications projects that in addition to PCs, more than 15 million information appliance products will be purchased in the next five years. The need to share Internet access, digital information, and computing resources among PCs and other information appliances is expected to spark consumer demand for a home networking solution.

"Centillium actively seeks to deliver broadband solutions inside the home, and we believe that HomePNA’s innovative technology roadmap will help consumers easily and simultaneously share Internet access, computers, peripherals and telephone services," said Dori Braun, director of marketing for Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) products, Centillium Technology. "We also know that broadband delivery and distribution at an economical price will be paramount to the successful deployment of home networks. Centillium’s high levels of product integration and powerful DSP technology will enable cost-effective home networking solutions. We are working with the current 1Mbit/s network specification and look forward to participating in the second generation of high-speed home networks, which is targeted at 10Mbit/s and allows for simultaneous communication of voice, video, and data."

"HomePNA is pleased to add Centillium to our growing number of member companies," said Cyrus Namazi, chairperson of HomePNA. "Each new member brings us closer to our goal of achieving industry standardization through widespread deployment."

Benefits of Home Phoneline-based Networks

A simple, cost-effective, and proven solution for consumers that requires no costly or disruptive rewiring of the home, the phoneline network utilizes existing telephone wiring to connect computers and devices without interrupting phone service. Home phoneline networking will work with existing Internet access technologies, such as V.90, ADSL, or cable modems. Key applications enabled by home networking include shared Internet access, shared data and applications, shared peripherals (printers, scanners, modems, digital cameras, storage devices, etc.), and multi-player gaming.

About the Home Phoneline Networking Alliance

The Home Phoneline Networking Alliance is an incorporated, non-profit association of industry-leading companies working together to help ensure adoption of a single, unified phoneline networking industry standard and rapidly bring to market a range of interoperable home networking solutions.
