CENTILLIUM COPPERLITE CPE CHIPSET CHOSEN BY CIS TECHNOLOGY FOR MASS MARKET DSL MODEMS

Leading Taiwanese Modem Maker Announces G.Lite DSL Modem With PCI Interface to Target High-Volume Consumer PC Market

FREMONT, Calif. - November 17, 1998
- Centillium Technology Corporation, a leading innovator in the emerging market for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) chipset solutions, today announced that its new CopperLite chipset for customer premises equipment (CPE) has been selected by CIS Technology, Inc., for their new G.Lite DSL modem. The CopperLite-based modem provides end users with high-bandwidth access to the Internet at speeds of 1536 kilobits per second (Kbps) downstream and 512 Kbps upstream over regular copper phone lines.

The new modem, which will be jointly exhibited by Centillium and CIS Technology at Fall Comdex98 (Booth L6862 Convention Center, North Hall), will begin shipping to OEM customers in the first quarter of 1999. Based on the Centillium CopperLite chipset, the modem features a PCI interface and meets the newly determined G.992.2 standard for consumer-oriented DSL. It provides large personal computer manufacturers with a cost-effective solution for adding value to their PC products with built-in G.Lite modems designed for mass markets.

CIS Technology is the second major manufacturer of PC modems to select the CopperLite solution. It joins a growing list of central office (CO) and CPE customers that include Askey Computer Corporation and NEC Corporation. CIS Technology, which primarily supplies PC OEMs, also markets many of its OEM products under the name Wisecom. As an ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certified manufacturer, it is able to meet the rigid standards and special needs of top system integrators and brand name distributors.

"We are extremely pleased that CIS Technology, one of the leading PC modem manufacturers, has chosen the CopperLite CPE chipset for its high-speed digital modem offerings," said Dori Braun, Director of Marketing CPE Products, Centillium Technology. "We understand that exacting customers, such as CIS Technology, want to see actual working solutions, not just promises and projections. Our turnkey solutions have allowed CIS Technology, and other manufacturers, to meet critical time-to-market deadlines and align with shrinking R&D budgets. For example, we have already delivered working G.Lite silicon at InterOp98, and CIS Technology is demonstrating the PCI plug-and-play modem card at Comdex in November 1998."

CopperLite CPE Solution

The CopperLite CPE chipset solution consists of the CopperLite CT-L10DT01 Digital chip and CopperLite CT-L10AT01 Analog chip. OEMs of personal computers and customer premises equipment can use these cost-effective, highly integrated chipsets as the foundation for developing digital modems. Unlike other G.Lite CPE chipset solutions, the highly integrated CopperLite architecture does not require external memory or real-time microprocessor intervention. As a result, overall personal computer system performance is completely unaffected by the addition of a CopperLite-base modem.

Each CopperLite CPE chipset provides all of the required functionality for high-bandwidth, splitterless DSL services based on the G.Lite/DMT standard (G.992.2) recently defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The CopperLite solution allows scalable traffic rates to be set in 32-Kbit steps, which helps DSL service providers offer multiple price points for their services. The CopperLite solution also delivers ample processing power to ensure software upgradability and future proofing over time, eliminating the need for costly hardware upgrades.
