In-Place Activation
Your browser is capable of displaying the contents of certain types of documents inside your browser. This is called "In Place Activation". Depending on your browser configuration and your operating system, you may be able to control this default behavior. Typically Microsoft Internet Explorer will attempt to open Microsoft Word or Excel files inside of the browser. It may even allow you to edit the contents of the document from inside the browser.
Remember, however, that you will not be able to save those changes into infoRouter (refer to Editing Documents). If you would like to change this behavior so that Microsoft Office files will open in their native applications (i.e. Word docs open in Word, not in IE), follow these steps:
For Windows 2000:
  • Right-click on My Computer and select Explore.
  • From the Tools Menu, select Folder Options.
  • A window with 4 tabs will appear. Select the tab named File Types.
  • From the file types list, select the type of file for which you wish to change the in-place activation behavior.
  • Click on the Advanced button.
  • This will bring up a new window titled Edit File Type.
  • In this window, look for a checkbox labeled Browse in Same Window.
  • Make sure that this checkbox is NOT checked.
For Windows 98 & 95:
  • Right-click on My Computer and select Explore.
  • From the View Menu, select Folder Options.
  • A window with 3 tabs will appear. Select the tab named File Types.
  • From the file types list, select the type of file.
  • Click on the Edit button. This will bring up a new window titled Edit File Type.
  • At this window, look for a checkbox labeled Browse in Same Window.
  • Make sure that this checkbox is NOT checked.
For Windows NT or Windows NT Workstation
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Start Registry Editor and locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
Under this key, locate the appropriate subkey for the specific Office document type.
Here are some sample keys:

Document TypeSubkey
Microsoft Access 7.0 database applicationAccess.Application.7
Microsoft Access 97 database applicationAccess.Application.8
Microsoft Excel 7.0 worksheetExcel.Sheet.5
Microsoft Excel 97 worksheetExcel.Sheet.8
Microsoft Word 7.0 documentWord.Document.6
Microsoft Word 97 documentWord.Document.8
Microsoft PowerPoint 7.0 presentationPowerPoint.Show.7
Microsoft PowerPoint 97 presentationPowerPoint.Show.8
Microsoft Project 98 projectMSProject.Project.8

For example, the .xls extension is associated with Microsoft Excel worksheets. Under the .xls subkey, the (default) value contains the string Excel.Sheet.5. Therefore, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Excel.Sheet.5 subkey is the appropriate subkey for the Microsoft Excel Worksheet document type.
After you identify the appropriate subkey:
  • Click the subkey
  • Click Add Value on the Edit menu
  • Add the following value:
    • Value name: BrowserFlags
    • Data type: REG_DWORD
    • Value: 8
Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
